Foundation
A public-service corporation, the “Irradiation Development Association”, the predecessor of the “Radiation Application Development Association” (RADA), was established on June 12, 1968.
Objective
RADA contributes to the improvement of human life and international social progress by promoting the application of radiation in industries and advancing technical cooperation for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, both domestically and internationally.

Looking Back
For many years the Association worked to promote the application of radiation by publishing a technical journal, supervising irradiation techniques, conducting various forms of research, and sponsoring symposia, seminars and international training.
In the early stage of its activities at the Takasaki Radiation Chemistry Research Establishment of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), the Association launched test irradiation of gamma-rays using JAERI's cobalt-60 ganma-ray irradiation facilities. In the 1970s its sphere of research grew to include neutrons and electron beams using reactors and electron accelerators. Its field of endeavor has also extended to technical support for research reactor users and customer service for Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application (TIARA) users. These activities have gone far to confirm the application of radiation.
In later years Association efforts expanded to include the technology transfer of radiation application and fundamental nuclear engineering to Japanese industries.
In December 1996 the name of the Association was changed to the “Radiation Application Development Association” to reflect its broadened realm of activities.
Today, the RADA's activities include the organizing of international seminars on nuclear safety and cooperation with Asian countries, the former Soviet Union and East European countries, and the annual conduct of introductory radiation and nuclear energy seminars for elementary, junior high, and high school teachers in Japan.

Secretariat & Tokai Establishment
In 1977, this establishment was built on JAERI premises, in order to implement neutron irradiation for producing silicon semiconductors using JAERI research reactors. The Secretariat moved here simultaneously. Since then the establishment has been engaged in various businesses concerning radiation applications and chemical analyses using research reactors and other research facilities.

Takasaki Establishment
Since its establishment in 1968, RADA has supported JAERI in the operation and use of irradiation facilities, as well as conducting irradiation tests by γ-rays and electron beams with JAERI's irradiation facilities (obtained ISO9001 certification in 2001). RADA has also endeavored to transfer radiation applications and basic nuclear technologies from R&D institutions to domestic industries.

International Nuclear Technology Cooperation Center
Since its formation in 1996, the center has been engaged in human resource development activities such as nuclear safety seminars for nuclear engineers and administrators in Asia, the former Soviet Union and central/east European countries, as well as introductory nuclear seminars for teachers to disseminate knowledge of radiation and nuclear science and technologies in Japan.
